Tiki-Taka is dead. Speed is the answer are we doomed?
|
OK a bit headline grabbing and simplistic but when the “top six” are having their biggest shake up, apart from Liverpool it seems a bit of a pattern is emerging. With Man Utd tearing City a new one, Liverpool unbeaten, Leicester 2nd, Chelsea doing reasonable with youth, Wolves speed and Newcastle all hitting hard and fast on the break it seems a turning point and a breaking of the love feast for Tiki-Taka football. No wonder combined with woeful set pieces we are struggling, apart from manager, owner, stadium, recruitment etc etc

You’re right but I’m saying that it’s playing hard and fast that is having the most success which we certainly don’t apart from when Antonio is in the team

Agree. Watching a few games yesterday the speed and precision some of the sides were breaking at was very impressive. Son is on a completely different level to anyone that we have. And to answer your question, yes we are fucked.

Nothing too new, all good teams have players with pace.
We prefer to sign the Noble pace model

Have always been surprised that Son hasn’t attracted the attention of bigger clubs. He would fit in at a Real Madrid , PSG , Liverpool etc
We play sloppy glacial football at the moment. Completely the opposite of what is successful in the modern game. You watch the likes of Leicester , Liverpool etc pass , run and break and you physically can’t visualise doing ANY of that.

Barcelona always had pace. They still play possession football.
City are suffering from not strengthening the defence.

We are not so far from combining possession and speed. All we need is a fit Antonio and/or our skillful possession players moving the ball forward with more urgency.

Fabianski also helps for playing. But your right Sajmo, too much doom and gloom on here. At times I feel people want a crap team and bad results for some reason.

I agree. Slow possession football died a while back, first by teams playing a defend deep, pace based counter attack system, amd then with a high intensity high paced high lress style game. Both counter the slow possession technical game well which is designed to drag teams out of position and pick holes to thread through.
Trouble we are having is the average teams play the deep block counter (which is effective against Us) and the top teams play the latter hugh paced high lress game which is also effective.
Our best games come when we're forced to play the former by a second echelon teams, and the likes of Antonio and Masuaku, Anderson and Lanzini are then able to break on the counter with pace.
Otherwise our most likely source of a goal seems to be the left back on the over lap, or Snodgrass' delivery from corners.

We have pace in sub standard players like Masuaku and Fredericks. In areas where pace is vital (esp given the way we set up), like the inverted wingers, we have no pace. Middle of the park, we have no athletes (Dec is brilliant but merely young, he's no machine like Herderson, Ndidi or Wanyama, Sanchez is barely bigger than Noble, who himself is small in stature).
It's all a fucking mess. I wouldn't be surprised if Roberto wasn't the quickest over 100m at the club. That's how fucking stupid our coaching set up seem to be when it comes to what's required in this league to be effective.

Speed is one thing, but we also have the dumbest squad in the league.
How many second balls or aerial duals do we win in a match? Under 20% I imagine.
Only team worse than us at it - or equally shit - is Arsenal.
We’d do far worse than get a Curbishley, Allardyce or Moyes in to work with the squad on that sort of thing. Even on a consultancy basis.

Anderson has got pace. What is incomprehensible is why he and others seem so reluctant to use it. How many times do you see us go on the break only for the whole thing to peter out while we're mincing about. It happens so often you're left wondering if it's deliberate. Bonkers.
Agree on the inverted wingers thing though, and I absolutely hate it.

Of course it's deliberate. It's the managers tactics. Doesn't believe in crosses, second balls, getting the opposition defense turned or any kind of direct play. It's just pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass until we can walk it into the net. Unfortunately it results in pass pass pass lost it, chase back, kick off. Repeat.

The allergy we seem to have to width is equally bonkers. Why buy a striker like Haller if you're not going to serve him up some crosses ? Pure daft.
